Inclusion and SEND Support at St George’s School
St George’s School is an inclusive community where every student’s needs are recognised early and supported thoughtfully. Our Inclusion Department works across the Prep School, Senior School and Sixth Form to ensure students receive the help they need to thrive. The team includes a SENCO, an SpLD teacher, Mentors, a full‑time School Nurse, a skilled Pastoral team and a large group of Learning Support Assistants. Together, they support students with specific learning difficulties as well as those who benefit from help with organisation, study skills or assistive technology. Staff receive regular training so they can deliver high‑quality adaptive teaching and practical strategies that benefit all learners.
Students’ needs are identified through classroom observation, assessment information, pastoral insight and close communication with families. Many needs can be met through adaptive classroom teaching, with teachers and the Inclusion Department working together to monitor progress. Where additional support is required, students are added to the SEND register in line with the SEND Code of Practice. Their strategies and provision are recorded on a Student Passport and Student Support Plan, reviewed regularly and shared with parents and staff.
We work closely with external professionals (including educational psychologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and mental health service) when further assessment or specialist input is needed. Recommendations are implemented consistently across the classroom and wider school environment.
Student voice is central to our approach, and young people are encouraged to share what helps them learn and feel confident. Parents are involved throughout, with regular communication and opportunities to contribute to reviews. The Inclusion Department also works closely with pastoral and safeguarding staff to ensure support aligns with students’ wider wellbeing needs.
Transitions are carefully planned at every stage. Students joining the Senior School benefit from a bespoke SEND transition programme, usually beginning in the Summer Term of Year 6, with close liaison with feeder primary schools. As students move through the Senior School and into the Sixth Form, support is reviewed to ensure it remains appropriate. For post‑16 pathways, St George’s School provides structured transition support, including guidance on suitable courses, liaison with colleges and training providers, and preparation for the increased independence expected beyond school.
