Basketball Update

Year 7 have continued their enthusiastic start to Basketball this term representing the New Orleans Pelicans in the Junior NBA West Midlands League. Their first match of term was against Christ Church School where improving offensive movements and shooting lead to an 18-12 victory for SGSE.

As part of the league, St George’s also took part in a 3-team competition beating Moseley Park and losing by a single basket to Phoenix Collegiate.  With improving game play due to their commitment to practice, the best Basketball of the season was still to come against Queensbridge with a 15-8 victory with sharp shooting from Nihal, Ahmad and Jude. This was followed by an extremely impressive victory against KES Birmingham where Khalid and Maxud played some excellent offensive play win 14-10.

Year 8 have also developed well as the term has progressed. Representing the Detroit Pistons in the Junior NBA West Midlands League, they played with great self-belief in the first round of matches against Shireland Collegiate Academy and Perryfields. A special mention to Ariela and Noah who impressed in defence with many remarkable rebounds in two close defeats. This was followed by another two festivals at Bishop Challoner and at Home, where pupils are continuing to develop their skills in competitive matches.

The Year 9 team have continued their fantastic return to competitive Basketball action. They showed great determination in a challenging friendly game with Turves Green School. This was followed by a great defensive performance by Manuel and Zach against Queensbridge School to lead SGSE to a 16-10 points victory. There was also fantastic teamwork and commitment against KES Birmingham, where the lead changed several times in a close 28-24 defeat.

Our girls team have also taken part in the Birmingham Basketball City competition. They scored 38 points across the 4 round-robin matches winning 2 and losing 2 to finish in 3rd place. Alaina showed fantastic driving and dribbling towards the basket and was commended as player of the tournament.

The Year 10 team have continued to be committed and resilient in Basketball practices while also being unlucky with a couple of cancelled fixtures. They started strongly against Bishop Challoner and despite losing 30-14, they will now aim to develop their defensive strategies in the third and fourth quarter.

The Year 11 team have continued to lead the school with some exceptional performances. They beat Harborne Academy 26-16 with Elias and Shaye demonstrating some excellent opposed lay-ups. This was followed by excellent self-belief and resilience against Shireland Collegiate Academy where they came back from 15-3 down to finish the match 36-28. In their final match, they showed fantastic determination and strong defence to draw 20-20 in entertaining game away against Turves Green Boys School.

The Lower School have also been in action with friendlies with Clifton Primary which lead to a 18-16 victory with sharp shooting Andrew leading the team in a fantastic group performance.

Basketball Sessions for all pupils continue all year round on a Thursday afterschool 3:35-4:30pm and Monday Lunchtime 12:45-1:15pm.

Pupils should be commended for determination to improve their skills this term with often over 30 students training on the outside courts after school. Basketball is proving to a be popular sport and we look forward to further updates on our successes during the Summer Term.
